Scientists have found a way to turn mechaninal energy into electrical energy using bacteria! Genetic engineering is being used in order to add four negatively charged molecules to one end of a protein which coats the M13 bacteriophage used in the research. This engineering creates a large charge difference within the protein which aids to increase the voltage of the virus. The demonstration that the scientists performed involved layering these genetically modified proteins and placeing them between two gold-plated electrodes which were connected to wires that led to a liquid crystal display. When pressure (mechanical energy) was applied to the system a 'one' flashed on the screen of the display indicating the device was able to produce about one quarter of the voltage that a common battery is able to. With more indepth research and some modifications, higher voltages may be able to be produced using viruses and they could then be used to operate tiny devices. The mechanical energy needed to start the transfer of energy into a usable form could be provided by simple movements and vibrations such as opening a door or walking up stairs. This is only the beginning of the viral personal power generator that could one day play a major role as an electrical provider to many devices created by nanotechnologists.

This is a perfect invention! Especially because we need to find ways to make cleaner energy that can help preserve the earth! Although it may take awhile before it can be made on a major scale, this is a major step for science, hopefully research continues to advance it!
